Ah, another MCO extension… Char kway teow, nasi lemak, assam pedas – how I miss simply hopping across the causeway for a bite of my favourite Malaysian dishes.
Sadly, it looks like leisure travelling is still not going to resume anytime soon, thanks to the pandemic. Nevertheless, there’s no need to fret! We’ve got you covered so you can get a taste of the foodie paradise from the comforts of your home.
1. Kota Zheng Zong Bak Kut Teh: Herbal claypot goodness
If there’s one dish which I stand with Malaysia for being the country that does it better, it’s bak kut teh. Kota Zheng Zong Bak Kut Teh hails from the state of Johor and has been around since 1980. Their signature item is none other than the Premium Bak Kut Teh with Buttons Mushrooms in Herbal Soup (from $18.60). Or if you prefer pork belly, there’s the Pork Belly Bak Kut Teh (from $13.78) too. Bak kut teh also goes well with Braised Pig’s Trotters (from $15.46) and Muar Mackerel Otah ($12.58), so don’t forget to get these dishes too!
2. Lavender Bakery: Cakes and bread from the popular bakery
Having used to visit their cafe after a long day of shopping in JB, I was super excited when Lavender Bakery finally opened their first Singapore bakery at Jewel Changi Airport. Here they offer a range of delicately handcrafted cakes that will surely be suitable for any occasion. Fruity favourites include, but are not limited to, the Tropical Mango Cake (from $42), Exotic Fruit Cake (from $46) and Strawberry Cake ($46). Cheese lovers will also enjoy the Baked Cheese (from $50) and Internet-famous Basque Burnt Cheesecake ($55).
3. PappaRich: Have delights from the house of all Malaysian favourites delivered
Pledging to deliver authentic Malaysian cuisine, PappaRich is a well-recognised brand which hails all from Malaysia itself. Savour the fiery sambal in their Nasi Lemak Classic with Fried Chicken ($15.94) or the spicy and tangy Assam Laksa ($15.94). Other Malaysian favourites include the rich and fragrant Chicken Curry Laksa ($15.94) and hearty KL Hokkien Mee ($15.94). Or if you’re just looking for a light, traditional Malaysian breakfast, the Roti Canai with Curry Chicken ($12.73) will surely hit the spot.
4. Penang Culture: Halal-certified authentic Penang delights
Another spot for scrumptious Malaysian delicacies, Penang Culture specialises in Penang cuisine. Get a taste of authentic Penang flavours in their Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodles ($12), Penang Assam Laksa ($11) as well as Penang Lor Bak ($9). You also can’t go wrong with their Premium Nasi Lemak ($20) or Premium Crab Meat & Salted Egg Fried Kway Teow ($21), which features a twist on the famous Penang-style char kway teow.
5. Penang Place: Family-run business at Suntec City
Specializing in traditional Penang dishes with over 17 years of history, Penang Place prides itself on serving up Penang hawker favourites. Some of their most popular dishes include the Penang Char Kway Teow with Big Prawns (from $15.90), Penang Hokkien Mee Soup ($11.90) and Penang Style Mee Goreng (from $12.50). Of course, with tropical weather like this, they also offer refreshing Malaysian desserts such as Chendol ($5.90) and Ice Kachang ($5.90).
6. Jia Xiang Sarawak Kolo Mee: A true bowl of Malaysian noodles

Kolo mee is a dry noodle dish native to Sarawak, which is admittedly a long way from Singapore. Thankfully, Jia Xiang Sarawak Kolo Mee has brought the famous Malaysian comfort dish to our shores! Savour the springy and flavourful noodles in their signature Jia Xiang Mee ($9.40), or the Gold Jia Xiang Mee (from $11.40) which comes with abalone slices. For something with a Western twist, try the Black Pepper Smoked Duck Kolo Mee ($9), Fried Chicken Kolo Mee ($9) or Fish Fillet Mee ($9).
