Inspired by a famous 19th century French chef Henri Charpentier and his signature “Crêpe Suzette”, founder, Naoki Arita opened his first humble café in Ashiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan in 1969. His baking philosophy: to create sweets that bring joy with a touch of surprise. Henri Charpentier prides itself on serving indulgent, creative and authentic pastries and desserts made of the finest quality, such as the use of original cultured butter that is painstakingly developed from raw milk originating exclusively from the Konsen area of Hokkaido. Henri Charpentier ultimately carved a name for itself as the best French patisserie brand in Japan.

With its humble roots as a small coffee shop in Ashiya, Japan, Henri Charpentier was founded in 1969 and has close to a hundred stores in Japan and Singapore today. Having set up shop in huge malls like ION Orchard, VivoCity and Great World City, Henri Charpentier is slowly becoming a familiar favourite with many Singaporeans, but did you know that the brand has a 5-time Guinness World Record for selling the largest number of financiers in the world? The woman behind this roaring success is Ami Arita, CEO of Henri Charpentier. How did she transition from a 15 year-long law career to running one of the biggest Japanese patisseries in the region, and what keeps her going? Check out our #HumansOFFnB feature to find out.

'A must-try item is their Double Cheesecake ($7.90), which contains two layers of cream and mascarpone cheese within a crust of tasty sable crumbs. It’s delightfully luscious and sweet, with two distinct textures and flavours contained in the one slice.'
Samantha Ting (SethLui)
Baked to perfection
'Every piece of the financiers is baked to golden brown perfection and is both buttery and fluffy. We’re intrigued at how they’ve managed to make something so light and yet so full of taste and texture.'
'Their cakes are generally of a good quality – soft, fresh cream used, and not too sweet, with Strawberry Shortcake, Matcha Opera and Mille Crepe counting as some of my favourites.'
Michelle Nah (Nahmj)
'The best seller at Henri Charpentier is the Short Cake ($9.50). A straweberry shortcake with abundant strawberry amidst the fragrance cream sandwiched between fluffy vanilla sponge cake.'

'Les Financiers. The financiers itself is not stated on the menu but it is available in their merchandising section for takeaway. Made with Hokkaido cultured butter and 2 types of top grade almond flour, we can only expect the finest quality.'
